May 23, 2012 (Sacramento): State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson will appear at Kit Carson Middle School’s Annual Career Day on Friday (May 25) after a 14-year-old 4.0 GPA student, who emigrated with her mother from Costa Rica in 2008, asked California’s schools chief to attend.
Rebeca Corrales wrote Torlakson a letter in which she credited Kit Carson Principal Charlie Watters and the school’s teachers and staff for helping her and asked California’s top educator to attend Friday’s event.

鶹 expands summer learning for kids despite cuts
‘Summer of Service’ helps stop ‘brain drain’ that disproportionately affects urban kids
May 30, 2012 (Sacramento): Despite deep state funding cuts that have forced the near elimination of traditional summer school, Sacramento City Unified School District is expanding its innovative “Summer of Service” program for teens.
“Summer of Service” combines community service and project-based learning with a traditional “bridge” program aimed at easing the sometimes scary transition to middle and high school. Last year, about 800 鶹 kids participated in the program.

June 5, 2012 (Sacramento): Fourteen student “green teams” from the Sacramento City Unified School District will learn on Thursday how much money they are getting to see their dreams of greener campuses come true.
鶹’s first-ever Project Green Allocation Awards will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday (June 7) at Rosemont High School, 9594 Kiefer Blvd.

As the neighborhood aged and children grew up and moved away, however, the school struggled to keep up its enrollment.
Board of Education Vacancy
Board of Education Trustee Ellyn Bell (Area 1) has submitted her letter of resignation to Sacramento County Office of Education Superintendent David Gordon. As a result, on November 1, 鶹’s Board of Education voted to appoint a replacement to serve out the remainder of her term. Deadline to apply for the vacancy is November 14, 2012 at 5pm.

“All of us at Sac City Unified and across the state are breathing a little easier today knowing that the citizens of California value public education and are willing to invest in our children’s futures through voter approval of Proposition 30.

October 29, 2012 (Sacramento): Sacramento City Unified School District officials are urging parents to follow common sense safety guidelines this Halloween (Wednesday, October 31) to ensure a fun, worry-free holiday for students and families.
“We want to see every student in class on Thursday morning ready to learn,” said 鶹 Sacramento Police Lt. Lisa Hinz, who heads 鶹 security services. “That can only happen if adults make sure that kids adhere to rules about safe walking, safe trick-or-treating and safe snacking.”
